What Nike Changed on the 30th Anniversary Air Max 90
Release: 21 December 2019

After a couple of weeks speculating on the new Air Max 90, Nike have explained what they’ve changed on the 30th anniversary edition. It has mostly been tweaks to the upper, resulting in a subtle yet drastically different package come 2020.

According to the Swoosh, the panel proportions have been reconfigured. It’s clearly seen on the mudguard, which starts lower at the forefoot and slopes more flatly. Additionally, the Swoosh tail runs sharply, leading a parallel line into the rear quarter. The materials chosen match more closely to the 1990 OG, evident by the mesh and microfibre, plus smooth nylon tongue. Importantly, the toe box doesn’t appear to suffer from ‘cliff toe’, an issue that’s let down previous AM90 retros.

Beyond what will be seen on-foot, the insoles reportedly have the Air Max 1 outsole design stamped underneath, perhaps as a nod to its forefather. And, best yet, they will come in the original skinny two-toned Nike Air box with the classic grey ‘hazard stripe’ pattern.

They’re all very exciting developments, and this first ‘Sail’ edition releases real soon. December 21, in fact. Get scrambling!
